Good News: Rescued Gibbons Bang and Make a Baby!
Two gibbons from the island of Java banged and made a baby! Why is this a big deal? Because this was the first baby gibbon to be born in the wild whose parents were saved from the illegal pet trade!
I love science. My favorite thing about science is how obsessed they are with getting endangered animals to bang. Pandas are the clear famous example, but there are so many species that could be saved just by sex! Which is why I get so excited when these plans work.
What makes these gibbons so special is it took scientist TEN YEARS to get to this point. When Gibbons are captured by poachers as babies they’re kept in cages and not socialized. The gibbons don’t know how to be gibbons! They have to learn. So these two love monkeys had to learn how to climb trees and fend for themselves. Once that was done, TA-DA, a miracle monkey child was born!
